About Rhodes Island

Geography/Topography
Rhodes is, the biggest island of the Dodecanese is situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by the Aegean Sea in the west and the Mediterranean in the east and is just 20 km away from the Turkish coast. One of the most popular and developed islands in the Mediterranean, Rhodes offers international-class hotels, varied nightlife and good sports facilities. It can boast of its shores that won many European Blue Flags, a distinction which awards beaches for their cleanliness and organized infrastructure. The west coast of Rhodes is subject to shore winds. Although it can be rough, it also is a windsurfer’s paradise. The east coast is more sheltered, with moderate winds. This is where the long and sandy beaches of the island are located.

Infrastructure
Rhodes offers an excellent infrastructure with a road network that is well surfaced. The telecommunication system is advanced and Health and Safety regulations are in accordance with the European standards.

WHY VISIT Rhodes?
Rhodes has a very active nightlife. In downtown Rhodes, and especially in the Old Town, there is a variety of discos, coffee-shops and bars suitable for any taste. In addition, action takes place at Faliraki beach. Quite different in character, but equally popular is Lindos, with stylish bars and clubs similar to Myconos's.

Gastronomy
Restaurant and taverna food tends to be very simple, rarely involving sauces, but with full use of local olive oil and charcoal grills. Dishes like dolmades, moussaka and gyros are local specialities. The Greek salad is famous. Menus typically include a selection of "Meze" (appetisers). The traditional spirit is ouzo, which is very similar to the French Pastis. Wine is popular as well, due to the two wineries of this island. Food is usually not hot, but warm.

Biking, Diving, Fishing, Golf, Hiking, Horse riding, Mini golf, Motor biking, Sailing, Tennis, Water skiing, Wind surfing.

Shopping
Special purchases include lace, jewellery, metalwork, pottery, garments and knitwear, furs, rugs, leather goods, local wines and spirits. Shopping hours differ depending on the season and type of shop, but shops are usually open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8h00 - 14h30 and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8h00 - 14h00 and from 17h30 - 20h30. Most holiday resort shops stay open in the evening until 23h00.
